There are NO Federal Grants for startups. www.grants.gov is the central grants registry for the Feds.
http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/smallbusiness/a/stategrants.htm gives a list of State Grants, if any.
Again, a grant for a startup is next to impossible to find. Most, if not all, of the available grants are aimed at job retention and community development. And most, if not all, are taking the form of ‘incentives’ as opposed to outright funding.
Your local Chamber and SBDC would have listings of any local grant programs available, and again, not likely for startups.
The closest possibility you might find is a ‘piggy back’ on a local non-profit organization’s grant eligibility.
There may still be some private foundation grant sources. They’ve pretty much disappeared. The local Library will have lists of foundations and grants providers.
The SBA has been very agressive in developing new loan programs. www.sba.gov Resources, State Tab, look for lenders and programs. Community Express and Patriot Express are two that I find very attractve. They also have a new ‘micro loan’ program specifically for home based businesses, but they are pretty restrictive on types. They’re looking at direct local jobs development as opposed to ‘online’ based business; contractors, service provders, etc.
All of these will require solid business planning, and they are looking very hard at experience and management strength.
Hate to ‘bust the bubble’ but the ‘grant fairy’ is dead, or she’s retired and living in Miami.
Good Luck
